Why Immigration Reform Will Fail
I still read the local newspaper from where I used to live. It's located in California's Central Valley and is one of the largest agricultural areas in the nation. I ran across this article, a headline story, in that paper today:
But the number of people seeking farm work has declined recently, making it more challenging for [orange] growers to find employees.

Reasons for the decline include immigration issues and the loss of workers to a higher paying industry that's booming in the Valley — construction.

"You've got a border situation that's getting more difficult from a security perspective than it has been, so your pool of labor has been reduced significantly," Nelson said.
Please note that this area of California is solidly Republican, as red as Mississippi.

The California economy and, indeed, much of the United States economy is completely dependent on the immigration (legal and illegal) of aliens to perform jobs that American's won't touch. Stop the immigration, wages for menial jobs will have to rise significantly to attract domestic labor. Do you actually think that Republican business people are going to settle for a tight labor market where they lose the power to set wages?
