Although use of highly toxic chemicals went down, the overall amount of agricultural pesticides skyrocketed from 180 million pounds in 2004 to 194 million pounds in 2005. That means statewide use was up by 14 million pounds in 2005, with Tulare County pitching in with 2.5 million extra pounds — going from 15 million pounds in 2004 to 17.5 million pounds in 2005.All three county's are in the Central Valley of California. How nice that "highly toxic" chemical use went down. So what chemical components are in the "other" chemicals used as fertilizers? Last I looked, nitrates were not considered "toxic".
It also means that Tulare County is the No. 3 county in the state in the amount of pesticides used. Only Fresno County, which topped the list with more than 32 millions pounds, and Kern County, which came in second with more than 28 million pounds, used more pesticides.
I'm a very lucky person with every allergy known to man but still happy to be enjoying a wonderful life living in the best place in the world!
But, you have to wonder, if nitrates get into your wells, what else comes with them?
