Digby has put up a fasinating segment of an interview with Sam Gardiner, a retired colonel from the military war colleges.
It's an important read, so don't miss it. The thrust of his statement is his belief that there's already operations going on inside Iran. Actually, it's been pretty much accepted that Special Ops units have infilitrated Iran to help with insurgents and to gather intelligence. Gardiner makes the case that the decision has been made, and that operations are already underway that include fighting and an impending air attack.
That would certainly explain the generals coming out. The point was
made in an article that it is highly unusual behavior for military people, even retired ones, to so openly express opposition to civilian leadership. It is drummed into recruits from the start that to do so is a very low form of life. For these guys to be stepping out is really quite significant, significance well beyond the understanding of anyone who has not served in the military. It would also explain the administrations
pushback today about Rummy, don't wanna changes horses in mid-stream and so on.
Frankly, given the administrations track record, it wouldn't surprise me at all. The timing is also perfect for the elections so Rove must be a happy man too. Like Colonel Gardiner said:
if you take the cartoon problem and multiply it times a hundred -- you know, the Danish cartoons, you could see how we could end up very quickly with a very serious problem in the Middle East.
Scary. Very scary. Still.
Meanwhile, the marketing continues.
