Regarding New Era of Bipartisanship
I'll merely steal Froomkin's headline:
Does Bush Mean It?
My gut says no. I'm open to seeing it. But any Democrat who is willing to give these guys any benefit of doubt is nuts. But you watch. There will be "Liebermanites" in Congress and the media who will hail the era of good feeling and "compassionate conservatism". It's much like believing a serial killer who says they'll never kill again ... while they're standing in prison.

If Bush were smart, he'd follow Ahhhhnold's example in California and actually work with the legislature to reach reasonable compromises. This tactic seriously undermined Angelides. But the big if here is the first line, "if Bush were smart". Either way, I'd love to be a fly on this wall:
"Bush invited Pelosi and Rep. Steny Hoyer of Maryland, the second-ranking Democratic leader in the House, to have lunch on Thursday at the White House. Bush also called a handful of other lawmakers and invited House Minority Leader Harry Reid and Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the No. 2 Senate Democrat, to the White House on Friday for a meeting over coffee."
Here's a hint to whether he means it or not. Tony Snow today:
"'Bush wants to go back to the Texas model. He's always reached out. He's been trying over the last couple of years with limited success,' Snow said."
See? He's been trying for years.

On a side note. I asked some California "insiders" last night who know and work with the players if Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and speaker of the Assembly Fabian Nunez sold Angelides down the river. The answer? "I've heard that rumor but don't know first hand". Read into it what you will. But Villaraigosa has made no secret he's going to run for governor in 2010.
