Oh No

Well, Steve Clemons is not a tinfoil hat type guy.

Quite the opposite actually. But today he's reporting that there's a rumor that Bush has signed a secret executive order authorizing operations in Iran and Syria:
Washington intelligence, military and foreign policy circles are abuzz today with speculation that the President, yesterday or in recent days, sent a secret Executive Order to the Secretary of Defense and to the Director of the CIA to launch military operations against Syria and Iran.

The President may have started a new secret, informal war against Syria and Iran without the consent of Congress or any broad discussion with the country.

...

But what is disconcerting is that some are speculating that Bush has decided to heat up military engagement with Iran and Syria -- taking possible action within their borders, not just within Iraq.

Some are suggesting that the Consulate raid [raid on the Iranian embassy in Kurdistan] may have been designed to try and prompt a military response from Iran -- to generate a casus belli for further American action.

If this is the case, the debate about adding four brigades to Iraq is pathetic. The situation will get even hotter than it now is, worsening the American position and exposing the fact that to fight Iran both within the borders of Iraq and into Iranian territory, there are not enough troops in the theatre.

Bush may really have pushed the escalation pedal more than any of us realize.
When Steve Clemons gets paranoid, I get scared. As I mentioned, he's not the type to pass this kind of thing along without some pretty good substantiation and fear of his own.

Clemons goes on to highlight a series of exchanges between Condi, Senator Hagel and Senator Biden today during Senate hearings. When asked directly about Iran, Rice gives a series of non-denial denials. Example:
SEN. BIDEN: Secretary Rice, do you believe the president has the constitutional authority to pursue across the border into Iraq (sic/Iran) or Syria, the networks in those countries?

SEC. RICE: Well, Mr. Chairman, I think I would not like to speculate on the president's constitutional authority or to try and say anything that certainly would abridge his constitutional authority, which is broad as commander in chief.

I do think that everyone will understand that -- the American people and I assume the Congress expect the president to do what is necessary to protect our forces.
Yep. Attack Iran and Syria to protect our forces. Gawd I also feel like I'm in a time warp and it's 1970. As Michael says here, this is a most dangerous time where our very Constitution is at risk.

Attywood notes that exactly 40 years ago today, LBJ gave a state of the union speech. Go read his excerpts. It's guaranteed to send chills down your spine.

I have to wonder what China and Russia are going to do when we get into it with Iran. My guess is they won't sit idly by. China just may call in some markers and at the levels to which we are indebted to them, we will probably have to sell them a couple of states to settle up!

Good point. The implications of a war with Iran are immense ....

But hey, isn't that new American Idol premiering soon?
