Secondary Issues
All of the issues we discuss here are secondary to the problem of global warming.
Jared Diamond's Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed examines why ancient societies, including the Anasazi of the American Southwest and the Viking colonies of Greenland, as well as modern ones such as Rwanda, have fallen apart. Not every collapse has an environmental origin, but an eco-meltdown is often the main catalyst, he argues, particularly when combined with society's response to (or disregard for) the coming disaster.
Every week I read more urgent warnings from scientists: not the faux scientists the religious right and corporations trot out when needed, but actual people of science. German environmental organization Germanwatch, along with the group Climate Action Network-Europe, have ranked the top 56 producers of greenhouse gases. Sweden, Britain and Denmark are doing the most to protect against climate change. Out of 56 the U.S. ranks 53, ahead of only China, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia.
I hear nothing but partisan bickering from D.C. I see little but the same rehash of the the issue du jour online. Is it possible that the neocons realize that a collapse is coming and have begun to institute draconian measures to deal with the resulting anarchy? Are the detention centers being built throughout the country part of that plan?
What is the big picture here?
