I have often thought of the weeks of boot camp needed to turn civilians into soldiers: weeks of resocialization to theoretically prepare them for the military. When the military is through with them, they are kicked loose like a dog thrown out on the highway. If we are serious about having a professional military perhaps we need to build a kind of "unboot camp" before soldiers are discharged. I'm guessing twice the time should be allotted for the resocialization back into the civilian world. I'm not sure how well it would work but at least an effort must be made to integrate these people back into society and identify those who need psychological help adjusting.
I never served in combat but I have trouble with people not getting the job done. I joined at 18 and besides being the dependent of a career AF, they tried to brainwash me in boot camp but I had authority issues that prevented that.
What I did get stuck with was if you are going to a do a job, do it right or don't do it at all. This is not appreciated in the "real world" as we used to refer to it. I'm fifty now and I still have a problem taking orders from incompetent people. In the military there are ways around it, not the least of which was getting promoted and after a certain rank, incompetence tends to be muted.
I really can't used to having to wear something different every day. While I appreciate not having to wear puke green, I do miss not having to think about what to wear. :)
