Taliban Treaty
I read this earlier today, but it didn't really register. The blogs have been quiet about it. But ... gasp! .... ABC News actually did a story on it tonight while contrasting it with Bush-the-windbag's fear mongering today. It appears one of our key allies is going off the reservation:
MIRAN SHAH, Pakistan The Pakistani government and pro-Taliban militants announced that they signed a peace accord Tuesday aimed at ending five years of violent unrest in a tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

The agreement came as a NATO-led offensive in southern Afghanistan continued for a fourth day, with U.S. artillery and airstrikes killing 50 to 60 suspected Taliban militants Tuesday, a NATO spokesman said.

Under the peace deal, the militants are to halt attacks on Pakistani forces in the semiautonomous North Waziristan region and stop crossing into nearby eastern Afghanistan to attack U.S. and Afghan forces hunting Qaeda and Taliban forces. It came as Pakistan's president, General Pervez Musharraf, was set to visit Kabul on Wednesday in a move aimed at improving strained relations between the United States' two key allies in the fight against terrorism.

The accord calls for Pakistani troops to stop their hugely unpopular military campaign in the restive Pakistani region, in which more than 350 soldiers have died, along with hundreds of militants and scores of civilians.
Whaaaaat! What happened to "you're either with us or agin' us"?

Looks like the bad guys now have a carved out space to hang out. And by signing a "peace treaty", hasn't Pakistan given them defacto nation status?

Pakistan is admitting they can't stop insurgents, and that should they continue to try they are risking their own government. This is a HUGE victory for Osama bin Laden, al Qaeda and the Taliban. Unless the U.S. moves in troops, which it cannot due to a little problem in Iraq, we're effectively back to where we were in pre-911.

Let me repeat that. We are right back to pre-911 as far as countering al Qaeda.

If this story doesn't gain speed it will be a crime. There is no greater measure of Bush's failure than to have Osama comfortable ensconced in a local area without fear of being hunted. This is obscene.

Added Later:

So, not only do these terrorists get a tidy little nation, but they don't leave the negotiating table empty handed:
In addition to the pullout of Pakistani troops, the "peace agreement" between Pakistan and the Taliban also provides for the Pakistani army to return captured Taliban weapons and prisoners.

"What this means is that the Taliban and al Qaeda leadership have effectively carved out a sanctuary inside Pakistan," said ABC News consultant Richard Clarke, the former White House counter-terrorism director.
I just find this incredulous. This should mean a slam-dunk end to Republicans in the mid-terms.

Un-freakin'-believable.

I saw that yesterday and did a double take: it is ABC covering the story. The same network that is airing the 9/11 mockumentary. What's up with that?
