You know what? Watching
the five or so minutes of the video of President Bush being informed about the 911 attack is painful.
Setting aside my dislike of Bush, watching him just sit there like a deer in the headlights is painful. The scene is a complete reveal on Bush's ability to lead, his ability to be President. But yet, who among us would have immediately sprung out of our chair, excused ourselves and jumped into action? I really think the natural human reaction in the midst of confusion, lack of information, and fear would be to be frozen for a few minutes. In Bush's case, these moments are caught on a very unflattering public stage and on video for all to see.
I guess the that's the difference between those who
should be President and those who
should not. Despite the carefully crafted Madison Ave. campaign, Bush is in that moment laid naked and shown to not be leadership material. That doesn't make him a bad person per se, just limited in his ability to be the world's most powerful leader ..... like most of us.
So as I watch Bush be very very human in that moment, I have a bit of empathy. But at the same time, he wanted the job and he got it. As Harry Truman (who Bush routinely compares himself to) said "the buck stops here", at the President. The biggest mistake Bush ever made was to seek the office in the first place. Everything else that has ultimately been disasterous just flows from that fundamental error in self-assessment, and voter candidate assessment.
