F**k the Poor
Republicans in the House of Representatives narrowly won passage on Wednesday of a controversial bill to trim about $39 billion from domestic spending over five years, capping a year-long push to cut health care for the poor and elderly and other programs.
By a partisan vote of 216-214, the House approved the bill, sending it to President George W. Bush for signing into law.

$39 billion is a drop in the bucket compared to the $150 billion for corporate subsidies and tax benefits. The Corporate Welfare Information Center has more on Republican priorities.

"After World War II, the nation's tax bill was roughly split between corporations and individuals. But after years of changes in the federal tax code and international economy, the corporate share of taxes has declined to a fourth the amount individuals pay, according to the US Office of Management and Budget." —Boston Globe series on Corporate Welfare

If you live in a red state as I do, be sure to send your Republican "representatives" a thank you note for voting for cuts to Medicaid spending. These cuts will affect 13 million people, most of them children. Better yet, send the thank you by way of a letter to the editor.

Lynne, I applaud your restraint in naming this post. Not sure I would be so circumspect.

This story is a total indictment of our country. In a story I put up the other day, we're spending enough on unnecessary submarine deployments to pay for these benefits. The budget priorities we implement are immoral and offensive.
