This is a minor point because Bush has no intention of doing it anyway.
But I just wanted to point out that Bush pledged to reduce our dependence on Middle Eastern oil by "75%". Sounds pretty good eh. Well the fact is that of all U.S. oil usage, only somewhere between 10% and 15% comes from the Middle East. So in fact, he's pledging a reduction of 75% of say 12%, not nearly as much as he'd like you to think.
I wrote an
extensive post on oil usage and oil imports some time ago. The number one supplier of imported oil is Canada with Venezula second. There are a number of other "unstable" countries on the list of oil suppliers such as Nigeria, Mexico, Iraq, and Angola. In the above post, I make the point that we could likely end imports from Saudia Arabia virtually overnight with new CAFE (gasoline mileage standards) and conservation (we did it in the 1970's after the first oil shock). But then Janey-Sue would have to give up her black suburban used to cart around her one year old fifty miles to a well-baby check-up. If Bush was serious, he could mobilize the country in an instant to stop prolifigate use of gasoline.
But like I said, it doesn't really matter because in reality, he'll do nothing to reduce imports from anywhere.
Added: Right on cue, administration officials came out today and said the Preznit
really didn't mean what he said last night about oil imports.
