Meanwhile, Version II
In Afghanistan, all hell is threatening to break loose:
All the papers mention that at least eight (the NYT says 16) civilians were killed yesterday in Afghanistan after a suicide bombing targeting an American military convoy led to "chaotic gunfire." Hundreds of Afghans went out into the streets and shouted anti-American and anti-government slogans. Although U.S. officials say the civilians were caught in the middle of shooting between troops and militants, many accused the Americans of shooting indiscriminately on a busy road.
If I didn't know better, this would have been the perfect description of the Boston Massacre.

If you haven't noticed, Afghanistan is really heating up. With the successful winter campaign of Islamic fundamentalist recruiting, it appears that a more vigourous insurgency may break out there. That is not good news as the area (Pakistan) is much more fragile and subject to coup thereby really giving fundamentalists access to nukes.

Update: Swell:
Nine Afghan civilians have been killed in a bombing raid in Kapisa province, Afghan officials say.
